In the United States, currently, the treatment of choice for Crohn's disease is steroids, Dr. Stephen Murphy explained. "Outside of the US, however, there is quite a lot of interest in using a nutritional liquid diet, which has become the first line of treatment in the UK," Dr. Murphy, from the University of Birmingham, told Reuters Health.

The total liquid enteral nutrition approach is free of the side effects associated with heavy repetitive steroid therapy. However, it is an onerous treatment for children, requiring them to take all nutrients in liquid form for a 6-week period, Dr. Murphy noted.

"There has been suggestions in recent years that if you administered lots of liquid supplements, you might not have to stop eating -- you'd actually administer a partial enteral nutrition (PEN)" he said.

To compare the efficacy of PEN and TEN, Dr. Murphy and colleagues worked with 50 children with a pediatric Crohn's disease activity index (PCDAI) >20.

Twenty-six of the children were assigned to receive half of their energy requirements as elemental formula and encouraged to eat an unrestricted diet (PEN) for 6 weeks. The other 24 children were assigned to receive100% of their energy needs from liquid formula and were not allowed to eat (TEN).

The researchers found that the remission rate with PEN (15%) was lower than with TEN (42%), and that although PCDAI fell in both groups, the reduction was greater with TEN.

With both treatments, abdominal pains, sense of well-being, and nutritional status improved significantly. However, blood tests showed that only TEN resulted in an increase in hemoglobin and albumin, and a fall in platelets and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

"The results showed that you need to stop eating for a liquid diet to work, therefore partial enteral nutrition is not as effective as a total enteral nutrition diet," concluded Dr. Murphy. "On the other hand, TEN remains a burdensome, as well as a more expensive treatment option than steroids."

Moja Panna jak się wyciągnie to ma 157 i już nie rośnie. Ja jestem nie dużo wyższa i chwalę to sobie. Klopot Panna ma z butami,bo w naszym kraju trudno dostać 34 na obcasie.
